Joel has a sincere passion and a vested interest in projects that advance and build community, which is reflected in design that is sensitive to the site context and has a transformational impact on the surroundings.  He also recognizes the ability to build community in the interior design of each project, bringing people together in inspiring spaces that enrich the lives of everyone who experiences the space.         

Through his 43 years of practice, he has become known as a visionary, an excellent listener to his client’s needs, and a dynamic creator of space through design. Due to his creative, flexible, and innovative approach to project management, Joel has earned a reputation for being a relentless problem solver. He tirelessly pursues the optimal design solution that will create lasting value, making communities and the world a better place.

About to celebrate the firm’s 30th anniversary, Williams Blackstock Architects has completed a variety of projects around the city, throughout the state, and the nation. Joel has been instrumental in expanding the firm’s presence nationally, having served a variety of clients in over 20 states. Growing steadily from four employees to 54, the firm has been blessed with the opportunity to work for incredible clients and to design high-profile projects that have positively impacted the city and campuses across the region.

WBA 2023 Holiday Party

We had a blast celebrating the holidays together last weekend at The Florentine. We were very merry and bright together with good food, wonderful friends, a photo booth, and a highly competitive gift swap!

Holiday Toy Drive

All of us at Williams Blackstock Architects were proud to support The Circle of Love with their Toy Drive again this year - ensuring that children have presents to open this holiday season! We were thrilled to have filled up two large boxes and more to bring joy to local children. Our holiday toy drive is one of our favorite traditions to be a part of and we are so happy to give back to our community.

Giving Thanks

We had our annual Thanksgiving potluck which was a feast full of laughter, warmth, and cherished recipes. We used the time to reflect on the blessings of amazing colleagues, wonderful clients, and countless opportunities to give back to our community.

Alabaster Police Department Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Yesterday marked a momentous occasion as we proudly participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Alabaster Police Department. The 34,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility is a testament to progress and the commitment to community service. We're honored to have played a role in creating a space that the citizens of Alabaster can take pride in and to provide a place where these dedicated police officers can better serve their community.

A Toast for A Newly Licensed Architect

Thrilled to announce a major milestone for our talented colleague Celia Gannaway! She's officially a licensed architect, and we couldn't be prouder. Her dedication, hard work, and passion for design have truly paid off.

We were all to happy to have an office-wide champagne toast to her acheivement. Here's to the next chapter of shaping breathtaking spaces and pushing boundaries!

Take a look inside the new headquarters for The Nature Conservancy in Alabama! We are excited to have partnered with them on this project to bring out the history of the building while creating a high-profile public presence that represents the work they do across the state.

Since The Nature Conservancy works around the state—saving lands, working on rivers and preserving our coastal systems—it is important that we have a space where we can work together in a collaborative fashion. A space like this in the heart of Birmingham can be an example of the kind of work that we’re doing around the state, as well as a place where the community can come together to meet and talk about the work we’re doing for conservation in Alabama.

Allison Chang-Roberts

PROMOTED TO DIRECTOR OF HEALTHCARE

Allison is promoted to Director of Healthcare. Her role will be to focus on business development, project oversight and execution of projects in the healthcare sector. She will be expanding the firm’s healthcare project opportunities, utilizing her deep design expertise and passion for client service and relationships. Allison’s experience with planning, her passion for designing spaces that are practical and functional to meet client needs, yet inspirational, position her to lead this aspect of the firm’s work. She is known for her leadership, commitment to customer service, and effective communication.

Joey Tudisco

PROMOTED TO SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Joey is promoted to Senior Associate in the firm. Joey’s client-focused mentality is unparalleled. He works in close partnership with clients to meet their expectations and deliver successful results. He has worked on some of the firm’s most complex projects through the years, with unfailing positivity that propels him and his teammates forward. With a methodical and practical approach, Joey manages projects to ensure spectacular outcomes with his dedication to design excellence and detail.

Kyle Stover

Kyle is promoted to Associate in the firm. He is a talented architect and has demonstrated his commitment to the firm and the profession with his excellent work. Kyle has a wide range of experience, has demonstrated a commitment to learning, and a great ability to manage projects. With a wonderful ease of communication and collaborative, supportive approach he has helped propel project teams to deliver successful projects with the highest level of service.

Rachel Perry

PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE

Rachel is promoted to Associate in the firm. She is a technical powerhouse who excels at understanding complex project details, providing efficient and effective drawings while mastering the latest technology to do it. She has demonstrated her value to the firm with her detailed work, effectively being responsible for key roles on many of the firm’s significant projects. Rachel is unfailingly focused and holds a high standard on executing complex projects in a dynamic and thorough way, and effectively coordinating with the project team.

Carter Brown

Carter is promoted to Associate in the firm. His architectural talent has consistently underscored him as a significant part of the firm, delivering high-quality design work and construction documents with a steady, focused demeanor. Carter’s involvement in some of our most intricate, technology-driven projects showcases his dedication and skill. Carter’s collaborative approach with project teams, and his relentless efforts to ensure project success for our clients, epitomizes the spirit of teamwork.

2023 AIA Alabama Awards

Our team had the honor of accepting three design awards this weekend at the 2023 AIA Alabama Conference on Architecture. The design for the Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Pavilion won an Honor Award, Bailey Harris Construction won an Honorable Mention, and our Firm Front Lobby & Table won a Devine Detail Award. A huge congratulations to the entire team who worked on these projects! We are thrilled to receive such a significant recognition.

Honor Award

We are proud to announce that the design for The Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Pavilion has won an AIA Alabama Honor Award. The pavilion was designed as a welcome center for the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which are part of EJI’s work to advance truth and justice in America and to more honestly confront the legacy of slavery, lynching, and segregation.

Merit Award - Design Detail

The reception lobby features a sleek and minimalistic table, with a skillful interplay of charcoal soapstone and a single piece of folded blackened steel. The cantilevered effect of the heavy material is intentionally created to provoke a sense of wonder and challenge the limits of what is possible. Dynamic veining in the natural stone creates a beautiful accent to the wood and steel backdrop.
