BENNIE ADKINS STATE VETERANS HOME

Enterprise, Alabama

The Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins State Veterans Home is an assisted living and healthcare facility designed to provide long-term skilled nursing care for 174 veterans. Drawing inspiration from traditional Southern charm, the architecture embraces a contemporary farmhouse aesthetic characterized by classic board-and-batten siding, rustic stone accents, and expansive covered porches, harmonizing seamlessly with the rural setting.

The building complex consists of six interconnected neighborhoods organized around a central Town Center, serving as the vibrant heart of the community. This welcoming space features a grand stone fireplace, comfortable seating areas, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking beautifully landscaped courtyards.

The primary artery of the facility, Main Street, houses essential amenities including physical and speech therapy rooms, a salon, sports bar, dining room, library, chapel, as well as training and board rooms for staff. Curated display cases line Main Street, paying tribute to each branch of the military. This thoughtfully designed corridor serves as the primary internal circulation path, encouraging interaction and connectivity among residents.

Each neighborhood includes two inviting living rooms, providing intimate areas where residents can relax, dine, and socialize. Special attention is given to fostering a warm, home-like environment; personalized glass display cases outside resident rooms allow veterans to showcase personal mementos and easily identify their living spaces. Architectural cupolas atop each neighborhood entrance introduce abundant natural daylight, enhancing the bright and welcoming atmosphere throughout.

Spacious covered porches surround two interior courtyards, offering dedicated outdoor areas for residents to gather, relax, or reminisce. These courtyards also function as integral circulation paths, utilizing covered walkways to support efficient movement for both residents and staff across the extensive campus.

Every aspect of the design thoughtfully prioritizes comfort, dignity, and community, creating a nurturing environment where veterans receive exceptional care in a setting that truly feels like home.
