COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR BENNIE ADKINS STATE VETERANS HOME

Enterprise, Alabama

The Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins State Veterans Home in Enterprise, Alabama will be a long-term state-of-the-art Veterans health care facility. The facility will be approximately 182,000 square feet and house 175 residents.

The inspiration for the design was to honor the character and image of the town. Rustic farmhouses and historical homes with large front porches were primary elements incorporated into the design. The facility will have a contemporary farmhouse appearance with board and batten siding and stone accents. Fitting in to the rustic, rural area, large covered porches wrap each building within the facility allowing veterans to enjoy the sun or shade. Cupola’s rise atop each building to allow natural light into every entry way.

After driving up a tree-lined drive, veterans and guests arrive at the welcoming front porch entry way. The porch has an expansive front lawn vista looking out over the horizon - perfect for watching the sun set from a rocking chair.

The floorplan contains seven buildings under one roof around a central Town Center which is the heart of the facility. The perfect place for gathering, the Town Center has Center has large windows that open into the courtyards, tables, chairs, couches, and a large stone fireplace in the center of the room. There is strong access throughout the facility through the Main Street area. Here guests can find a barber shop, beauty shop, dining, and a chapel. Manicured courtyards are perfect for outdoor gatherings, relaxing, or people-watching.

The site of the facility will be on 108 acres off Highway 51 just north of Yancey Parker Industrial Park. This location was chosen largely because of the considerable veteran population in Coffee County. Studies indicate the county, and Enterprise in particular, will see a significant growth in the veteran population in coming years.
