Auburn Public Library
Auburn, Alabama
This 28,420 square foot library replaces a small, cramped facility previously occupied by the client. Generous space with flexibility and the simplicity of future expansion were critical design considerations to accommodate the rapidly increasing population of the area and their expanding collection. Realizing this civic scale facility on a prominent site allowed for grand gestures, such as sweeping curves that invite and hold the community and a long clerestoried spine that floods the building with light and organizes all of the functions. Interior departmental adjacencies were planned to accommodate future expansions with a minimum of disruption. High ceilings and a panoramic view from the reading room draw users to one end of the building and a centrally located, elongated circulation desk allows visual control of virtually the entire facility and physical control at the entry and exit.
